BUSY, BUSY

Whew! It's been crazy around here lately, you guys.

About a month ago, the online daily discount site, Zulily, reached out to me about featuring me in three different collections, including an entire Charm & Gumption collection (which will be happening next week)! I mean...whhaaaaa???

This is one of the biggest things to ever happen for me with Charm & Gumption and I have been just so honored and thrilled to be a part of this big name site.

So, my days have been spent literally just keeping up with orders. Lately, I have been feeling like I really need to figure out some way to get my time freed up a little bit. I need to have enough time to grow the business not just keep my head above water. I'm still working on that.

In the evenings, I have been on a serious cleaning and organizing rampage. I don't know what's up with that, but I do get in those moods from time to time. A couple of nights ago I got up out of bed at 11 pm and started cleaning out my closet until 3am. Seriously...who does that?

(ps. cut up a pool noodle and put it in your boots to keep them standing up! thanks Pinterest!)

If you have the same organization-freak tendencies, might I suggest this youtube channel, made by a girl who is the real life Monica Geller. Every single square inch of her home is perfectly organized and labeled. She's my hero. She opens her filing cabinet, and I swear the angels sing. Warning: it fuels the fire. I find myself thinking things like "I really need to organize my coffee and tea packets". Not normal!

Anyway, I thought I would check in and give you a little update! I should have a new video and post up on Friday. xo!

NEW PRINTS IN THE SHOP!

Today, I thought I would share five new designs in the shop. I hope you find them motivational, inspiring, and maybe even a little bit funny (thanks, LC for the inspiration for this print!).

I will also be adding matching coffee mugs probably early next week, so be on the lookout for that. :)

DESIGN A LIFE YOU LOVE

DESIGN A LIFE YOU LOVE | Charm & Gumption

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about where I want to take Charm & Gumption, and how I want my career to look, long-term.

I started thinking about this word "passion". It's something that we're told we're supposed to seek and find and do in order to be happy, and the more that I thought about it, the more I realized that we maybe have been misled about its meaning.

Is your "passion" just another word for something that you love to do? By those standards, I discovered early on that I had a passion for performing. I also have a passion for good design. I am pretty darn passionate about the truffle fries at Burger Up. I am passionate about my dog and my husband. I really love shopping - does that make it my passion?

I think that you can be passionate about a lot of things, and the commonly-given advice to "find your passion" is misleading. I think we need to start thinking less about our action-based passions and more about our life's passion, which is typically more of a strong value in our lives.

For most of my life, I thought that I was meant to be an actress (as embarrassing as that is to type in this blog post) because acting scared and excited me in a strange way that nothing else did. It gave me butterflies and I loved it. I have sort of been pursuing it "on the side" for quite a few years now.

But I realized over time that in order to really pursue it, I would have to either move or be willing to travel constantly, work 12 hour days on set, hundreds of miles away from my husband and family, postpone having children until I got to a certain "level" where I felt I could take some time off (what / when would this be exactly?), and most likely have to partake in romantic scenes with dudes who are not my husband. The life of a working actor is not glamourous, by any means, and only about .000001% of actors are "famous" or "invited-to-the-Oscars" actors. Most are just normal people who work regularly on TV shows, commercials, etc.

It didn't feel right, but it was my "passion"....wasn't it?

See how following an action-based passion can sometimes lead you astray? If your action-based passion doesn't match up with your life's values, then it's not your real passion. Let me give you an example...

If you have the action-based passion: of "cooking", your real passion may be for
"sharing the knowledge of the health benefits of organic, locally sourced food with others"
or it might be
"teaching people the simplicity and power of a home-cooked meal and eating at the table with your family"
or maybe
"creating a delicious masterpiece out of everyday foods with simple tools".

See how the cores of those three passions are different? Just pursuing cooking rather than the core of why you are drawn to cooking may lead you into a life that you aren't happy with.

So what the heck is the point?

I finally narrowed down that my passion isn't "acting" or "freelance graphic design" or even "entrepreneurship". My passion, and the core of what connected those actions, was the fact that they were all career paths that required taking chances, not settling for the status quo, choosing your own path.

That's what I love. I love people who don't do what other people want them to do, just because of social pressure. I love people who choose a scarier path in order to be true to themselves.

That might be the musician living in a studio apartment whose parents wanted him to be a doctor, the CEO who quit her stressful job to pursue teaching yoga full-time, or the 28 year old who was climbing up the corporate ladder when she realized that she wanted to devote her time to being a stay-at-home mom and raising a family. It isn't limited to one specific career or life path.

It's about designing a life you love.

All this to say: that's the direction that you will see Charm & Gumption going. I have a lot of new things planned for this blog and the site, including a new design and some new product offerings (more on that later). You can expect more posts dedicated to helping you design a life you love, and less beauty and fashion related topics...because I love beauty and fashion, but they're not my real passion.

Let me know what you think in the comments, and thanks for reading this super long post! Also, my goal for those of you reading is to start thinking about your real passion vs things that you enjoy doing. Is there an overlap that you could take advantage of in your career? xo!

A COUPLE OF NEW PRINTS IN THE SHOP

I added a couple of new prints to the shop yesterday, and I'm really excited about them! I think that these two designs have multiple uses: my prints are usually created with workspaces in mind, but  "dream" could also be used in a nursery, and "work it out" would look awesome in a home gym next to the treadmill, don't you think?

I'm really into scripty fonts right now, and I love that the letters in "Dream" are so big that they run right off the page, just as your own dreams should!

I love the black, shadow detail in "Work it out", which adds just a touch of something different to the plain gold foil.

I will also be adding the corresponding mugs, customizable prints and notepads as usual in the next couple of days, but I just couldn't wait to share the finished prints with you guys.

What do you think? Do you have a favorite?

SURVEY RESULTS

Thanks so much for taking the survey that I posted last week, you guys! You have no idea how helpful it is to get your feedback.

Sometimes, as a blogger, it can feel like you're just putting stuff out into the world of "The Internets" and not getting any response. It's hard to gauge what people are liking and not liking without doing some type of formal survey, which is why I put one out every so often - thank you for your help!

If you are interested in the results of the survey, here's a summary of what I learned about you lovely ladies.

Most of you...

1. are between the ages of 18 and 24.

2. have been reading my blog / watching my youtube channel for 3-11 months.

3. found my blog through the Charm & Gumption website or Youtube (I found this surprising, as the youtube channel is quite new).

4. follow along through a blog reader, instagram, or youtube.

5. enjoy reading about small business tips, decorating, and style the most.

6. would like to see more small business tips, decorating, and personal posts.

7. didn't have any specific topic that you'd like to see less of (yay!).

8. think that the frequency of my posts is just right (yay!).

9. like having videos to go along with posts, at least some of the time.

10. stay updated with youtube or a blog reader.

There are a few changes that  I will be making in response to your feedback:

  • I am going to be making an editorial calendar for the first time since I started my blog. Doing this will allow me to balance out the topics that I cover by seeing in advance what the topic will be. This will ensure that I don't cover one topic too many times. Most people seemed to be okay with the topics that I cover, so I just want to make sure that I keep the topics balanced throughout the month.
  • I am making a weekly goal of posting on the blog 3 times per week, with one of those posts including a video. This seems to be what you guys are interested in, in terms of frequency and video posts.
  • I am going to post a little more of the things that you like: small business tips, decorating, and more about my life and what's going on with me. This was one of the things that I found surprising. I always assume that posting about my life will bore you guys! So thank you for your interest in my life! :)

Thank you guys again for taking the survey, and for your continued support. xo!

I would love, love, love if you guys would take a few minutes to answer this super quick, 10-question survey, which will help me gain feedback about what you want to see more of on this blog. Thank you in advance! xoxo

THE DREAMER COLLECTION

Today I'm excited to introduce a new collection of prints in the shop, The Dreamer Collection! This is a set of 4 prints in a hot pink, gold, and black color palette and all different sizes, so that they can be easily arranged into a gallery wall. It includes two of my usual style typography prints, as well as two pattern prints to add to your collection. One is a hand painted rose pattern, and the other is a thin herringbone pattern that really shines in person!

I was inspired to create these prints because the new year is coming, and I love that so much can change over the course of one year. It's hard for me to believe that just one year ago, Charm & Gumption hadn't even opened yet...anything could happen!

The prints are each available separately, or you can purchase the entire suite and save 25%. Shop them here! xo!

NEW OFFICE ORGANIZATION

I can't even tell you guys how much my life has improved since getting my own office in the new house! Just having a place to keep everything for the shop out and organized makes my day so much more efficient (I used to work in a corner of the living room in our old apartment).

Yesterday, the mister and I put together this new Ikea Expedit Workstation (which consists of this shelf and this table). It is perfect for containing all of my shipping supplies and prints, and the attached table is the perfect shipping work area. I already had the smaller Expedit on the left, so I put it next to the larger one and made a giant shelf wall for all of the boutique items. I highly recommend the workstation for any other shop owners out there - it is the best solution I have found.

NEW OFFICE ORGANIZATION

I want to get about 8 more of these under shelf baskets as well because they double the storage space:

NEW OFFICE ORGANIZATION

I also hung this pretty garland up on the opposite wall, which makes the room a little sparklier. I can't wait to hang more art up in the house! I've been waiting until other priorities are done, like painting, but hanging art always makes a house feel more homey.

NEW OFFICE ORGANIZATION

The second I got the camera out, Chester posed for me, so I had to take his picture too of course (such a little diva, this dog). :)

I hope you guys have a great week! xo

HOLIDAY 2013 PREVIEW

Hey guys! Things are super crazy right now with the move, but I wanted to check in and give you a little sneak peek at the new holiday cards I've been working on. I'm trying to be really mindful this year of making something for everyone, rather than focusing completely on families / married couples / etc.

Here are three that I've made so far:

NEW WEBSITE IS LIVE!

I've been the absolute worst blogger ever lately! So sorry, you guys. I've just been super busy with business stuff and I've been working on my fancy new website! I'd love for you to check it out and let me know what you think. I designed a few wedding suites, baby announcements, shower invitations, and such with many more designs to come in the future. I still have a lot of tweaking to do on little things that bother me with the site (stupid perfectionism!), but the site is up and working so I thought I would show you, and let you know that I'm still alive haha. I hope you've had a great week - TGIF! xo
